Classifieds are advertisements placed in newspapers or other publications with the aim of selling an item, product or service.

The name originates from the format in which such advertisements are traditionally displayed, under headings relating to the type of item or service thus they are classified into categories.

Originally all advertisements were text based, with no images used to promote the sale.

The greater majority of offline publications, such as magazines and newspapers, have classified sections. Online classified directories such as craigslist have shot to fame over the past few years, providing sellers with an instant mass audience. For young families classified advertisements can be an economical way to purchase essential items for the home. Many families can not afford to purchase new goods, and thus good quality items will often be reused by several owners before finding their way to the dump.
