Marketing is an all encompassing term which describes everything that a company does in order to generate sales. This does not only include advertising campaigns, but every aspect that is perceived by the public. Even the way in which a company recruits new staff members is therefore an important part of a structured marketing strategy.

That being said advertising is indeed an important part of marketing, with the average child in the United States being exposed to an estimated 40,000 TV commercial each year.

Children are a common target for advertising companies with the American Beverage Association stating that at one point three quarters of schools had exclusive contracts with soda companies such as Pepsi and Coca Cola.
